The NCC in India was formed as a result of an act known as the National Cadet Corps Act of 1948. The Act was approved on July 15 the 15th of July, 1948. National Cadet Corps can be seen as the successor of the University Officers Training Corps (UOTC) that was founded in 1942 by the British at the time of 1942. British during 1942. In the years following World War II, the UOTC didn't meet the requirements set by the British. The result was that better programs should be created, that could assist more children in a more effective manner even during peacetime. A group led by Pandit H.N. Kunzru proposed a cadet organization to be formed within schools and colleges on a nationwide scale. In 1948 the National Cadet Corps Act was passed by the Governor General and on July 15th, 1948, The National Cadet Corps came into existence.

In the wars of 1965 and 1971 between the United States and Pakistan, NCC Cadets served as the second primary line of defence. They organized camps that helped the factories that manufactured ordinance, and supplied ammunition and arms at the front. They also formed patrol groups to take down enemy paratroopers. The NCC Cadets also worked together with Civil Defence authorities and actively took part in rescue missions and traffic management. In the wake of the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars, the NCC syllabus was revised. Instead of being merely the second line of defense, the NCC syllabus placed more emphasis on the formation of leadership and officer-like qualities. The military-related education provided to NCC student received cut back and greater emphasis was placed on other areas , such as social service and youth management.
